29.Oct.2011 You can always count on Fidel!

In his video work “Opus” (2005)  José Toirac takes one of Fidel Castro’s marathon speeches and reduces it to its bare usage of numbers. What goes through one’s mind while being confronted with this armada of numbers is first of all the contentual redundancy of it all, since no one listening to Castro’s speech could have stored this sheer mass of information. However, even if the audience didn’t learn anything contentwise, Castro certainly did manipulate his folks by torpedoing them with this numerical flood into thinking that their country must be quite something, since there are so many figures to hype it.

There’s only one slight problem with Toirac’s work: it is even less bearable than its uncompressed original.
